LECTURES

Week 9:
During this week, we were taught how to use After Effects with our Photoshop file as a preparation for the final project. After following the tutorials, I decided to revise what I learnt by using my composition back from Task 1 and animate it.

Week 10:
For this week, we explored the Puppet tool and also how to add movement videos as an overlay in the background.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK
Task 3: Self-Titled
Idea Development
Before starting, I have to write something about myself and what message I am trying to convey as a way to brainstorm for ideas.

From the things I have written about myself and my work, I try to look into both Surrealism and Pop Surrealism for ideas in Pinterest.

Design Direction
I drew out two sketches that are related to my ideas. I tried exaggerating parts of a human body to bring out the Pop Surrealism element.
Figure 2.3 & 2.4 1st & 2nd Sketch

After letting Mr. Fitri review my work, he suggested to go with my 1st Sketch as it is quite interesting and less tedious when animating in After Effects than 2nd Sketch.
He also mentioned some things that can be improved to my sketch.

He also mentioned my sketch wasn't following the correct format (1080x1920) so after improving it, I adjusted some things to make it fit the correct format.

Then, I looked up necessary photos for my work.

Next, I moved into Photoshop. I started off with doing my background with the shape tool to create circles to represent the holes on cheese and a square to make a cheese table.

I mask a picture of a mouse running and I followed a tutorial video online on how to duplicate an object around a circle as Mr. Fitri suggested I can make mice run in circle in After Effects.

This is the tutorial video I followed:

Afterwards, I applied some shadow on the mice.

I took a picture of myself and mask it in Photoshop.

I adjusted the curve of the photo and also used what I learnt back in the Hearst Mansion tutorial to match my picture's colour with the background

I also mask out cat paws to myself and also use honey pictures to represent the cheese melting.

One of my objects is a paint brush slightly pressed on the hair, but I couldn't find a complete picture of it online. So I revise what I learnt in Photo Manipulation and combine 2 objects together.

I masked the other necessary objects and arrange them into the composition I want.

During two of my reviews with Mr. Fitri, he suggested changes to the shadow of my mice. During the 1st review, he suggested to make the shadow a darker brown to make it less gray. But after looking at the overall in 2nd review, he suggested to make it more orange instead to match the background better.

He also suggested to make my cheese background into middle ground instead and have a solid colour background at the back to make it less packed. After 1st review, I make the background dark brown, trying to show contrast. In 2nd review, he suggested to make it dark orange instead to match it better.

Execution and Post Production
In After Effects, I practise what I learnt in the tutorial and apply effects such as Rotate and Position.

I also applied the puppet tool to the cat paws to make it bend and liquid to make it drip slowly.

FEEDBACKS

Week 10
Feedback: Go with 1st Sketch, have different hands doing different things, try to make the mice a circle to make it go in circles when in After Effects.

Week 11
Feedback: Shadow for mice try dark brown colour and multiply, make the background cheese as a middle ground by making the background look like a frame and use contrast colour like dark brown for it as the overall was quite yellow.

Week 12
Feedback: Everything meets the requirements, some adjustment to the colour of shadow for the mice and also adding a little gradient and lighter colour for background

REFLECTIONS

Despite it being a final project, I find the whole process quite fun and interesting as I got to express my ideas using the things I learnt throughout the semester. For example, how to create shadows, masking objects, making objects match colour with the background etc.

Through the final project, I also got to learn how to use After Effects to make my poster animated which I find it not that challenging despite it being my first time using the app. It is all thanks to the tutorials by Mr. Fitri, it really help me to reduce the challenges I faced.

I had a lot of fun bringing out my surrealistic concepts in both Photoshop and After Effects. I will definitely explore more on both of these apps to improve my own skills when I have free time for future projects.
