INSTRUCTIONS
TASK
Script Chosen
“Aim for the sky, but move slowly,
enjoying every step along the way. It is all those
little steps that make the journey complete.” -
Chanda Kochhar
Mood board / Reference
Figure 1.0 Moodboard / Reference
I underlined the keywords from the script chosen and try to
find pictures on what I can do on each keyword for the
illustration.
(Extracted from Documentation file)
Sky
-Using something bright like a star as the dream the character
is aiming for
-Night sky and stars create calm and imaginative atmosphere
Move slowly, enjoying
-Gentle movements such as walking through flowers and slow
pacing
-Walking through flowers as appreciating the process
Steps, journey
-Footprint show small actions
-More footprints to represent the journey
-Character moves closer to the dream in the end
Sketches
At first, I did some sketches according to my moodboard /
reference board. However, after letting my tutor review, he
mentioned that it will be harder to animate, especially on the leg
moving up the steps part. He mentioned to limit our animation and
try to be as lazy as possible as it will benefit our animating
process. He also suggested that I should play with different shots
too.
Figure 1.1 1st Sketch Draft
After letting him review, I thought of changing my character into
a bear instead because it is easier to draw. I also followed his
suggestions on making the enjoying part a scene where the hand is
on the flowers. I tried to do minimise the walking animation for
the little steps part.
Figure 1.2 2nd Sketch Draft
However, my tutor mentioned it will still be tough to do that. So I
asked him whether I can just move into the next scene straight away
which he agreed it will be better.
Figure 1.3 2nd Edited Sketch Draft
After animating, my tutor mentioned I should try and play with
perspective. He also fixed my second scene because he mentioned the
hand looks a little off. He also mentioned the text should be like a
part of the drawing, whether as a middle ground or a background. He
also brought back the fade out and fade in concept for my ending
scene.

He also showed me how the text should look like when in the video
which should be something like below:

So I redrew my final sketch before moving into Illustrator.

Illustrator Process
I digitised my sketch in Illustrator using techniques I learnt and
change the line strokes to look like it is drawn.

Illustrator New Techniques
Other than revising what I learnt, I also try to look up on new
Illustrator techniques I can apply to my work.
Figure 1.9 New Technique #1 (Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aNsiJxaixg)
I want to try out drawing grass without taking too much time so I
followed this tutorial video to create grass brushes with different
greens and just draw out grass lines with brush tool.
Figure 1.10 New Technique #2 (Video:

I want to create flowers with some gradient and identical petals
so I followed this tutorial video to turn polygon shapes rounded
by using Pucker & Bloat tool. Next, I transform the flower and
adjust the angle so it won't look flat.

I want to draw out star trails as I think it will be
interesting and bring focus to the star. I used a quarter of a
circle and apply the transform effect to add copies of it and
rotate them in a circle.
I also applied different brush strokes to the star trails and
other objects which I learnt during physical tutorials.
After Effects Process
Then, I moved on into After Effects to animate it.

As my 2nd scene needs to have the flowers moving continuously, I
look up on tutorials on how to do it. I followed the video and use
the Motion Tile and Mirror Edges function to loop the flowers to
continuously move.
I also use
ElevenLabs to
generate a Text-to-speech narrator audio that is gentle and suitable
for the video.

Rationale:
For my video, I adopted a child-like visual style to reflect the theme
of pursuing dreams while enjoying the process, expressing a sense of
innocence and imagination. A bear was chosen as the main character as
it is commonly associated with childhood and comfort, creating a
gentle and reassuring tone. The star in the sky symbolises the dream,
while the flowers and footprints represent the small steps taken along
the journey. As the bear gradually moves closer to the star, a zoom-in
on the footsteps near the end highlights how small, consistent actions
can accumulate and lead toward a larger dream.

FEEDBACKS
Week 11
Sketch should be more simple as it will be hard to animate it.
Week 12
Sketch draft looks overall okay.
1st Review: Overall needs to have more perspectives. The text should be one
with the visuals.
2nd Review: Overall is better and improved.
During the making of this video, I practised the skills I have got
throughout the module especially when it comes to Illustrator. For
example, adding shadows and changing line strokes directly. I struggled at
first as there were some things that I didn’t really get it right such as
some parts of my drawing look odd and my placement of text should be one
with the visuals. Some help and physical consultation with Mr. Hafiz
helped me to overcome the challenges. I also got to improve on my usage of
perspective shots with the help of Mr. Hafiz as he gave me a lot of
feedbacks. Overall it was a good struggle and I am glad I got to improve
many of my own skills.
