TASK

Google Drive Compilation of Slides and Presentation:

Task 1: Proposal

First, we formed a group of 6 and researched on problems in Kuala Lumpur. Then, we had to propose 3 proposals for the problems.

Team members:
0372994 NAZ FATIMA (Team Leader)
0392039 TAN YUN SIN
0389915 TAN KHAI JIAT
0378201 JOYCE WONG SIEW WEI
0376497 JANICE CHEAH PEI ERN
0391487 LIU MENGDI

We focused on pedestrians, wheelchair users and delivery riders' challenges in KL. We did some brainstorming first before we proceed with the slides.

Brainstorming document

After brainstorming, we narrowed down to heat problems for pedestrians, navigation problems for wheelchair users and safety problems for delivery riders.

Task 2: Data Collection
After having 3 proposals, we went to our selected location for field study to collect data on the proposals we have. My group decided to merge our 1st and 3rd proposal after the field study as we faced some challenges in collecting the data we needed. Afterwards, we planned to create a shade structure for the pedestrians who are waiting near pedestrian crossings in Bukit Bintang, KL. This is because during our field study, we saw many pedestrians used umbrellas and hats to protect themselves from the Sun while waiting at the crossings so we decided to look into this topic instead.

Task 3: Final Output
After our data collection, we summarised both Task 1 and Task 2 into our slides. We decided to design a retractable umbrella canopy to be placed on top of light poles for the pedestrians who are waiting at the pedestrian crossings. The design will protect the pedestrians who are waiting from direct sun exposure and rain. We also create final visuals of how our solution will look like in the real world.

GROUP'S FEEDBACKS
Task 1
Week 1
Specific Feedback:  For proposal 1, hold on to the idea of tree bark, can take a look at getting people outdoors a bit more. Can try repurposing between buildings. Proposal 1 can relate to Proposal 3 by repurposing space as shelter.

Week 2
General Feedback: Looks okay as we have discussed all 3 ideas during our last meet.

Task 2
Week 5
Specific Feedback: Can talk about materials used for the sketches' inspiration in Task 2. Can take a look at how Japan borrow umbrellas to pedestrian. Can do a mock-up for Task 3.

Task 3
Week 6
General Feedback: Showed drawn out design, may continue with the development of Final Output.

Week 7
General Feedback: Separate the Final Output into multiple slides so that the concept explanation and images can be viewed at a bigger scale.

REFLECTIONS

Throughout the tasks, I got to explore more about KL and some of the challenges faced by different communities. In my opinion, this module is a bit difficult as it was during a short semester and we as a group also faced many challenges from our different timings outside of class along with getting the data we needed during field study. But overall, I learnt a lot about how we can integrate different cultures and innovations from other countries into Malaysia to improve the urban experience. I also got to put my time management skills to the test as the deadlines were quite tight. I will definitely carry what I learnt into my future modules.
