CLASS NOTES
Week 1
A production has pre-production, during production and post production.
Pre-production includes story planning, acting audition and equipment and
location planning. During production, there will be video shooting,
costume and lighting. Post production has offline editing, online editing
and audio editing.
Week 2
Close up can cause drama, tension, discomfort
If medium shot close to the character, zoom out first to wide shot then
only zoom back in to medium shot if want to change shooting place to
avoid jumping feel
Zoom in to an action like turning a door knob can be interesting
Eye angle is comfortable and let us feel what the character is feeling
When planning shots of two characters, make sure the camera only travels
in a horizontal axis, not cross section
Shot can be continuous view shot
Scene can be different with different setting
Week 3
Ambience sound is the background sound
Hard sound plays into an action or event
Week 5
Watch out for white balance when shooting
Week 8
Colour correction can make the whites seem white and blacks seem black
in a shooted scene
Afterwards only use colour grading

TASK
Week 1 exercises:
For Week 1, we explored on the basic functions of Adobe Premiere Pro such as
Mark in and Mark out and how to change the resolution and frames of a video.
Week 1 Mints video:
Then, we try to rearrange the video clips that are given in the correct
sequence using the app.
Week 1 Doritos (Independent learning) video:
Zach King's Videos Shortlist
Video link: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/i3nGV93gsfU
In this Zach King's video, he attempts to get an approval from Gordon
Ramsey. Zach and Gordon are place side by side at different
environments to create a split-screen composition. First, he pulls up
the emoji keyboard which contrast with the realistic background. He
proceeds to transform a physical hamburger from the emojis.
Afterwards, Gordon pulls out the emoji keyboard and turning it into a
napkin through a smooth transition. Gordon goes into where Zach is and
Gordon's background shifts into a picture cardboard instead to eat the
physical burger. After eating the burger, Gordon flips the side by
side quickly and turning the round burger into a cardboard burger.
Overall, this video uses quick transitions and compositing techniques
to create a convincing visual effect.

For this video, Zach is seen painting a picture of the Golden Gate
Bridge. The picture looks exactly like the Golden Gate Bridge in the
background which creates a forced perspective when specifically
angled, makes it directly blend with the realistic background. He
proceeds to paint the bridge in the picture red and when the picture
is taken away, the bridge in the background also turns into red to
complete the illusion. Overall, this video uses precise camera
positioning, compositing and colour manipulation to blur the boundary
between a painted picture and the real environment.

This video has Zach trying to make a toast using the toaster. When he
puts a slice of bread into the toaster, the side of the toaster opens
up to reveal two miniature chefs trying to toast the bread using tools
of a fire torch and flamethrower. The bread turns black when they are
waving their tools as if they are painting the bread black. When the
toasted bread pops out, Zach throws the burnt toast behind him and
gets a new slice of bread, creating an seamless looping effect.
Overall, this video uses green screen, motion tracking for the colour
and precise editing to create a continuous and believable illusion.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
In a nutshell, Everything Everywhere All At Once talks about Evelyn, a
mother who at first struggles to accept her daughter, Joy's identity
and relationship while also facing difficulties and dissatisfaction in
her own life. Evelyn goes on to discover different versions of herself
across the multiverse and found out that she has to confront Jobu
Tupaki, a version of Joy who has powers and concluded that nothing in
life matters. Evelyn eventually accepts Joy as who she is by showing
her empathy and kindness.
There are a lot of visual effects used in the movie to build its
sci-fi concept, especially during Evelyn's jumps through different
universes. One of the VFX that captures my attention is the bizzare
transformations involving objects like food. For example, in one
universe, characters have sausages or hot dogs fingers instead of
normal fingers, making the fingers looked surreal and unhumanly long.
Another VFX is the combination of bagel and the black hole, making it
the "everything bagel" to represent nihilism and overwhelming
existence. There is also the scene where Jobu uses her powers to
explode one of the policemen into confettis instead of just using
blood like the other scenes throughout the movie which I find it quite
unexpected and creative.
Week 2 exercises:
During class, we were tasked to take a short video of someone being
stalked as an exercise for us to practise the different shots we have
learnt. My group consisted of three members, me, Joyce and Jocelyn.
Afterwards, we have to edit the video to 20~40 seconds in Premiere Pro.
Week 2 Stalk Video:
Shots used:
3-Act Structure
1. Lalin
Theme: It conveys that true beauty will show when you accept
who you are instead of a fake 'perfect' image online.
Act 1 & Inciting Incident
The story starts off with an introduction of Lalin, who feels insecure
about her appearance as she was bullied for it. She moves to Japan and
notices that people around her wear masks, which makes her feel less out
of place. The inciting incident happens when she found a beauty
filter app and decided to create a 'perfect' version of herself online,
which brings her attention and validation.
Act 2 & Midpoint
As she gains more attention online, she gradually takes on her fake
online identity. She develops a connection with a boy online who asks
her to help him translate his work. As their relationship gets closer,
the risk of her real self getting exposed increases. The
midpoint is reached when she rejects seeing the boy physically at
a cafe, fearing that he might hate her for her appearance.
Act 3 & Climax
After the boy leaves the cafe, she finds the work he left behind. The
climax occurs when she read through his work, she realises the
boy knew her all along. She confronts her insecurities after the truth
is revealed.
2. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
Theme: It revolves around how even when nothing seems to
matter in a chaotic world, you can still create purpose through kindness
and empathy.
The movie title itself has established the 3 acts of the movie,
Everything, Everywhere and All at Once.
Act 1 & Inciting Incident
Everything or also known as Act 1, starts off with an introduction to
the main character, Evelyn showing her life struggles leading to her
disappointment with her life and her relationship with her daughter Joy.
The inciting incident happens when Alpha Waymond takes over her
husband's body and introduces her to the multiverse to stop Jobu Tupaki.
She accepts the challenge and explores the multiverse, leaving her
current world behind.
Act 2 & Midpoint
Everywhere or also known as Act 2, shows the journey of Evelyn
travelling through the multiverse learning different skills to stop
Jobu. Throughout the journey, she gradually views everything in a
nihilistic way just like Jobu, that nothing matters. The
midpoint is reached and she gives up. She eventually realises
that fighting isn't the approach to stop Jobu.
Act 3 & Climax
All at Once or also known as Act 3, the movie's climax is reached
where Evelyn faces Jobu with empathy and kindness rather than violence.
She also comes to accept her current world's life. In the end, she
returns back to her own life with a new perspective of living in the
moment and reconciled with her family.
Week 3 exercises:
During class, we were tasked to take different shots based on the
examples given with our group members
Deep focus-FG: MCU, BG:full body
O.S on M.W.S
Tight M.S
Tight M.S side angle
Week 5 exercises:
For this week, we were separated into two groups and had to test out
the film production process so we were given a template as a
practice before the official production.
Shooting Practice:
Final Scene 1:
Final Scene 2:
Week 8 exercises:
Exercise 1
For this week, we were given footages to learn how to colour correct, then colour grading in Premiere Pro.
Exercise 2
In this exercise, we were given an audio to learn how to audio shape for different situations, which are muffled, phone call and in the cave.
Link for tutorial audios:
Week 9/10 exercises:
For this week, we were given footages to try out using functions in After Effects. We had to use VFX to make the hand look like it is flicking the person far away.
